Last week, I went South to Regina to see the opening of When Raven Becomes Spider, which featured work from Joi Arcand – specifically her NDN Supermaidens series. I had modelled for this second edition, and was heading there with three other young women from the city – two other models in the series and one production assistant/mentee that assisted during the YXE shooting of the series.
So why my big face?
I’m not afraid to selfie.
In reality, it was an interesting trip. I’m friends with these girls, but we are also on very different times in our lives and it makes me grin. For the longest time, I was the hold out without any kids in my circle of friends and as I immerse myself further and longer into academics, I find that the crowd I hang with is now – child-less. There seems to be very little room for children when you hit that MA and PhD section of life. Or it could be the Urban Indian aspect of it all? I don’t know. But either way, I’m the mom, and am I ever the Mom. It’s so ingrained now. I wanted to be like “I”M FUN, I SWAER” but legit, I’m not that cool anymore.
So I guess I’m cool with being the Mom. I’ll sip my starbucks and remember the stories later that way.
Eeeeeee.
At the end of the day, we had driven long hours and ate good food, sipping beers at the local pub before heading home. It was dark and cold, and the headlights were shining bright as we made a pee-break, traditional style, at the side of the road.
“Let’s take some pictures,” I said.
The smoke and flooding lights made things interesting, and we laughed some more as we climbed back into the car. The perks of bringing a photographer along, the photos always look cool.
